Blessed with an abundance of natural resources and diverse topography, Matador Ranch management measures its operational decisions to determine how they offer wildlife habitat enhancements. Under active game management since 2000, Matador Ranch embarked in 2008 upon a new chapter in its resource management program by expanding its commercial hunting operation and adding a controlled area used for improving the deer genetics on the ranch.
In addition to the new deer-breeding program, the ranch, with a full-time wildlife manager and consulting wildlife biologist, focuses on improving its deer herd genetics through year-round, high-protein diets from food plots and supplement feed. Deer harvested have shown a continual improvement in greater antler growth and additional body weight. A limited number of mature bucks are harvested each year. Since the game management program was initiated, hunters have harvested numerous animals recognized by the Texas Wildlife Association's Texas Big Game Awards.
